Which Social Media Should I Be Using for my Business?

There are so many social media platforms out there, it can be quite confusing when deciding which are best for promoting a business in your niche. Don’t worry though – we can help!

When deciding on a social media platform for your business, it’s important to remember you don’t need to be everywhere at once. Different social platforms are better for different niches. Take time to consider who your target audience is. Is it other professionals or businesses? If so, Linkedin is great for that. Are you aiming at a younger audience, perhaps early 20s? Instagram can help you reach them.

What social media platforms are out there?

The most popular social platforms of 2019 are

Questions to ask yourself

Consider your target audience, who are you selling to?

This is really important because in order to reach your target audience, you need to be on the same platforms as they are. If you aren’t posting to a social platform that your target audience isn’t reading, what’s the point?

What social media platforms are my main competitors using, and are the succeeding on it?

Research is everything. Make a list of all of your main competitors and track what they are doing, when they are doing it and how much interaction they are receiving. It’s not about copying, its about gaining information on how to make your business more attractive to both your potential clients and search engines.

What sort of content posted out by my competitors is most successful?

Take note of what social content your competitors are putting out. Are they posting ‘behind the scenes’ style photos of their employees at work? Does their audience seem to like this? Maybe they are posting constant ads and aren’t getting much interaction at all. You can learn from both success stories and the opposite too.

What should I post?

Once you have done your research and gathered some ideas, it’s time to create content.

Here are some content creation ideas that we find work!

Share content from your niche. – Sharing is caring! Interacting with other professionals in your niche whilst avoiding sharing content from direct competitors is a great way of growing a following who genuinely care about what you do.

How you do what you do. – Whether you make shoes by hand or print t-shirts using huge machinery; showing a hint at what goes into what you are selling makes your business feel more personal. Your audience feel like they know a bit more about you and your product, therefore they will be more interested in seeing further posts from you.

‘Did you know’ posts. – Sharing features of your business or product that people might not know about works well in both promoting your product and giving useful information to existing customers.

Photos of your products in use. – Show your products being used, show an idealistic representation of what your customers would look like, feel life or how much easier their life would be if they owned/ used your product.

Reviews and Quotes. – Share informative reviews and quotes to add a level of trust to your company. Reading or hearing what actual people are saying about you can make you feel more accessible.

How do I keep up with it all?

It can be daunting having to keep up with posts and reply to comments. We suggest that you set yourself a schedule and set yourself a reminder for when you need to post. Set aside 15 minutes of each day to go in to reply or interact with potential clients. This interaction will boost who’s timeline you are appearing on, so is definitely worthwhile.

How do I track how my social media is doing?

It is important to keep track of how much interaction your social media profiles are getting as well as how many people your posts are reaching. You can do this by checking the analytics within the platform. Or if you are using Shynee Digital Agency, you will get an easy to understand PDF report.

What should I avoid?

  1. Avoid setting up the wrong type of profile. Always check if the platform has a specific ‘business’ profile type, which most do. This means that you will have better access to analytics, but your profiles will also have a much more professional look.
  2. Don’t just post ads all the time. People will get bored of seeing your posts very quickly if all you do is obvious ads. Try to post a good mixture of content.
  3. Avoid only posting text. Use different types of media content types, like posting videos, typography, animations and photography. This variety of content will make your pages feel more interactive and inspiring.
  4. Don’t be too needy! There is nothing worse than a social media account that is constantly asking their followers to ‘share’ or ‘retweet’ a post. Create content that is genuinely interesting, so your followers will want to share.
